The average woman puts 515 chemicals on their body everyday (Bionsen, 2019) Wow.
You may be calming your mind of toxic thoughts, fuelling your body with the good stuff and releasing the bad stuff with movement, but making sure what you put on your skin is not adding to the toxic burden for your liver and kidneys to eliminate is the last piece of the puzzle of a truly holistic and effective detox that will see long term benefits.
While this may sound like a big (and overwhelming task) we’ve worked with leading experts in the health and beauty space to bring you the right tools, tips and products to kick-start a natural and detoxifying skincare routine.
Here are 3 tips to clean up your skincare routine.
1. REMOVE CHEMICALS FROM YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO DETOXING?
We spoke with Kayla from One Fine Secret to get the details.
Cosmetics is a poorly regulated industry where products are commonly made from untested chemicals. Interestingly, Europe has banned or restricted over 1,400 ingredients, however, the majority of these are still allowed in Australia!
Knowing that our skin is our body’s largest organ, the immense amount of foreign chemicals we absorb in our body has affect on a wide range of issues the include and not limited to:
Irregular bowel movements
WHAT CAN WE REMOVE AND USE AS AN ALTERNATIVE?
The top chemicals that you can look out for and try to remove from your beauty products include:
Found in perfumes, hand soaps, haircare, body and skincare. Whilst listed as ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ on the label, they can contain hundreds of potentially harmful, petroleum-derived ingredients. Commonly containing ingredients which disrupt endocrine (hormone) function and have been linked to reproductive harm.
Alternative: Products with natural essential oils as a scent or listed as fragrance and parfum free.
A widely used cosmetic preservative linked to endocrine (hormone) disruption, allergic reactions and skin irritation. Avoid products that have ingredients ending in ‘paraben’ e.g. methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, propyl-.
Sulphates – Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) & Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate (SLES)
Foaming cleansing agents found in shampoo, body wash, skincare are key to avoid. It alters the skin’s structure, has the potential to increase the penetration of chemicals into the bloodstream and a proven skin irritant.
Alternative: Milder sulphate-free alternatives.
Synthetic sunscreens, e.g. oxybenzone, octinoxate, PABA
These ingredients have been linked to hormone disruption where they mimic oestrogen, reproductive and developmental toxicity.
Alternative: Natural sunscreens i.e. zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based active ingredients.

2. ADD NATURAL PRODUCTS & TREATMENTS
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO DETOXING?
The lymphatic system is the body’s detoxification centre where we can use tools to encourage this natural process by boosting blood circulation beneath the skin with facial massaging. Taking a leaf from traditional practices (dating back to the 7th Century!) there are routines that can help with reducing this build up.
WHAT CAN WE ADD TO OUR BEAUTY ROUTINE?
Introducing the Jade roller and the Gua Sha tool from Zove Beauty. These are items we can ADD to our beauty toolkit and are best known to boost absorption of skincare products, help promote lymphatic drainage — reducing puffiness of the skin. (Bonus if you chill your roller in the fridge as the cooling sensation on the skin helps brighten your complexion and tighten pores.)
The Gua Sha tool has been historically used to help with eliminating toxins from the body; not just from the face but also different the neck, shoulder and back. It’s believed to help promote healthy blood circulation, resulting in the “glow” that we all desire in addition to assisting with muscle and joint pain.
The heart-shaped Gua Sha is suited to fit the contours of the face and jaw when used in a gentle ‘scraping’ motion which helps the reduction of inflammation.
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?
Swapping out something as simple as cotton pads with reusable ones is not only going to be benefiting your toxic levels and wallet; it will also benefit the environment. The Organic Trade Association has commented on cotton being the worlds dirtiest crop! The pesticide residue used is long lasting and ends up on our cotton balls and pads. Thankfully the team at Ecologist Co. have reusable cotton pads that can be popped in the wash with first and each following use.
3. MAINTAIN INVESTING IN YOUR SKIN
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO DETOXING?
We spoke with Marina from Resthouse Float Centre for the details!
When heat combines with epsom salts it allows the skin to sweat, which removes toxins through the pores and allows minerals to enter the very same way - helping you push what you don’t need out, and absorb what you do need in.
Now the important thing here is not to go for everyday bath bombs as some can contain ingredients that are adding chemicals to your body. So what you’re wanting to look out for are natural products like Epsom salts, utilising essential oils…or even popping out to a float tank.
WHAT CAN WE ADD TO OUR REGIME?
This involves jumping into an enclosed spa like tank, that contains Epsom Salt rich water (~500KG Magnesium Sulphate) which is heated to average skin temperature of 35°C. With the water containing this much Epsom salt, it causes the buoyancy of the human body, supporting and removing the effects of gravity, leaving you feeling completely weightless and allowing your entire body to relax.
The best thing that is in addition to being a natural way to detox your body, the floating tank also promotes circulation, correcting magnesium deficiency, lowering blood pressure, increasing energy levels and alleviating mental and physical stress by reducing cortisol…need we say more?
HOW TO GET STARTED?
Choose three of more of the following to implement this week:
Get educated on the ingredients you're putting on your skin whether that's your makeup or skin care
Replace harmful beauty products with more natural products (what's the lowest hanging fruit in your bathroom?)
Swap perfum for natural essential oils
Invest in reusable cotton pads
Remove toxins with an epsoum salt bath
Lymphatic facial massage once per week
BONUS - Get to a float tank session
